4chan was founded on 1 October 2003 by moot, a Something Awful member who mostly resides in ADTRW, the anime subforum of the Something Awful Forums. It generally is considered the predecessor of English speaking *chan boards.

[edit] Basic premise

4chan is a 2chan knockoff image board that serves primarily as a catch-all for weeaboos, faggots, and basically everyone in between. Despite common belief, 4chan is essentially a collaboration of all of the more perverse parts of the internet, and generally lays claim to the majority of memes and copypasta seen on many forums and websites. The effect of 4chan is so incredibly powerful that a simple joke, a football threat, resulted in the mass closure of an NFL stadium and the arrest of an "anonymous" member of the 4chan board.

It is important to note that, while 4chan is very popular and irreverent in its own right, it is by no means the action of moot or his own team, but rather the actions of people simply abusing the freedom of the board itself. Moot, along with his team of slightly backwards moderators, primarily tried to make 4chan an anime based website ripoff of 2chan, but over time the site has evolved into something much more sinister. This is important in that this is one of the few forums/websites on the internet that, while it promotes itself vigilantly, generally its userbase hates its administrators, moderators, and everyone in between. 4chan is nothing more than a collection of special people using one unrelated board, which makes it unique.
