[edit] Synopsis
POTTY POWER is a sensitive, positive, upbeat video that combines live action with animation to impart potty training and proper hygiene in an amusing, lively way. The video keeps kids engaged through storytelling, games, and songs, and children are motivated to want to use the toilet through motivating reinforcement from the friendly host, Jessica, her animated toilet paper roll, and other toddlers. Young children will learn through the example set by other kids their own age, and the message of the video is consistently underscored through repetition and fun songs such as "No More Diapers for Me," "Big Kid Underwear," and "What Can I Do When I'm Sitting on a Potty?"[1]
[edit] Reception
Potty Power has met a lukewarm reception. Despite its 2004 release, it has yet to gather enough critical response to receive a rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDB has refused to list it for unknown reasons. Initially, critics were quick to pan the film, describing it as "horrifying", "disturbing", and "like nails on a chalkboard." During an interview, rock musician Ozzy Osbourne dismissed the film as "goddamn shit", refusing to comment further. However, this may attest to the subtle brilliance of the film. One reviewer succinctly described it as "a classic of the film noir period rooted in German expressionist cinematography where the protagonists struggle against a world perceived as inherently corrupt and unsympathetic."[2] It currently has a 3.2 star rating on Netflix, ranking it above Love Battlefield, Billy Blanks: Tae Bo Kicks, and even The Legend of Ron Jeremy.
Perhaps the disparity in reviews is in part a result of the nontraditional casting choices. As another reviewer described, "you can only watch an animated, talking roll of toilet paper for so long and still keep your sanity." Arguably, this may well have been the director's intent. Cultural differences also play a significant role; worldwide, box office sales in the United States were less than a third of those in Mexico.[3]
